Blog Post 5. First impressions of architecture

About four years ago I didn't pay too much attention on buildings. I used to work as a plumber so technical stuff in houses and buildings were a bit more interesting, or it had to be. I remember seeing the Otaniemi campus are for first time when doing architecture exams. Campus architecture felt bit strange to me. Big blank brick surfaces and big opening to natures greenery. In other hand it felt beautiful, but not in like traditional way. It felt like good dream which you try to remember in the morning, but you can't grasp on to what the subject of the dream was. You could only remember flashes of it and the feeling of it.             Now 2023 having been here about three years I feel like I can grasp on to what the subject of the dream was and I can understand the architecture more profoundly.
First impressions of architecture are important, it is good that the building won't show all of it after one visit in places you visit often. If the place you are going to visit only once it is good that it will show you everything. Phrase "architecture shouldn't be joke" which is aimed towards post-modernism, I think is partly true. If the building you are going to visit only few times in your life time is joke, I think its funny. If you are visiting the building everyday then the joke gets old very rapidly. Amusement park is acceptable use of humour or joke is architecture.
Or in cities if the humour and jokes are well hidden, like Easter eggs then they will be more than acceptable. But if the jokes are in plain sight they will get old pretty fast. I hope that post-modernism architecture will get more recognition, because concept on joke in architecture has turned joke on itself.
